-Recent Government Statistics indicate that the Unemployment rate in America is currently 9.7%.

After looking into how the Bureau of Labor Statistics measures exactly WHO is unemployed, it becomes clear that the 9.7% figure is far too conservative an estimate.

A much more accurate measure of the Unemployment "Situation" can be found in the Bureau of Labor Statistics Economic News Release, table A-12 "Alternative measures of labor underutilization" Found here:

Row U-6 of the table indicates that the total Unemployed, Plus Workers that are no longer seeking employment (but who are still unemployed), Plus individuals that must work part time because full time employment is not available, is.... As of June: 16.5%, up from 10.3% of June 2008.

The official statistics place unemployment as of June 2008 at 5.7%

Just a FYI, 16.4% of our population is 50,169,854 people.
